2018 Impensata Merlot Napa Valley
The inaugural release of Impensata Merlot derives from the Ecotone Vineyard, the legendary vineyard formerly known as Thorevilos. Hidden amongst a whimsical forest on rolling hills near the base of Howell Mountain, this renowned vineyard was planted in 1990 by Napa Valley icons David Abreu and Ric Forman. Meticulously farmed by Abreu for nearly thirty years, the land is now stewarded by Jack Bittner, who gave the vineyard its new name of Ecotone, meaning the transition area between two biological communities, where two communities meet and integrate. Planted on white volcanic tufa, the fruit from this unique site exudes extraordinary power, richness, depth, and intense minerality.
In the spirit of the Maremma, Nigel's classical approach to winemaking combined with Michel's prodigious blending skills produces wines that speak to tradition and innovation. The 2018 Impensata Merlot is blended with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec coming from the Abreu's Las Posadas Vineyard on Howell Mountain and the Engelhard Vineyard in Calistoga, further escalating its remarkable ageability. Powerful and wild, yet classically sophisticated, the 2018 vintage has enthralling aromas of dried sage, mint, bittersweet chocolate, and sweet spice followed by a structured core of lively red fruit and firm tannins, intensifying the alluring sensuality of the wine. Only 81 cases produced.
"The 2018 Merlot Ecotone Vineyard is a powerful, brooding wine. Dried rose petal, mint and grilled herbs add an attractive savory component. There is certainly no lack of personality or character, that much is obvious." Antonio Gallon, Vinous
