2017 Impensata Engelhard Vineyard Proprietary Red Calistoga 1.5L

The Engelhard Vineyard is located off Franz Valley School Road in the western hillsides of Calistoga and planted with just under five acres of vines.  With volcanically-derived, well-draining soils, the ripening power of the heat and sun in Calistoga is tempered by Chalk Hill Gap breezes that cool the site by late afternoon.  This combination sets the foundation for a red blend with richness, structure, concentration, and finesse.

For the 2018 Engelhard Proprietary Red, winemakers Nigel Kinsman and Michel Rolland have crafted a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec, and 4% Merlot.  Deeply concentrated and beautifully balanced with dark black fruits, crème de cassis, and plum compote, along with savory notes of wild sage, menthol, licorice, and exotic spices.  Structured tannins and classic freshness deliver a wine that will age gracefully for decades.  Like many fine things, this wine is best with time, either in your cellar or in a decanter.
